riyadh emir inaugurates and lays foundation for 181 environmental projects in the region at over 38.1b saudi riyals
this evening, his royal highness hrh prince faisal bin bandar bin abdulaziz, emir of riyadh region, launched 82 developmental projects for environmental, water, and agricultural system in the region, at a cost exceeding 9.8 billion saudi riyals. hrh also laid the foundation stone for 99 developmental projects for the system, at a cost exceeding 28.3 billion saudi riyals, to support achieving environmental and water sustainability in accordance with the objectives of vision 2030.upon his arrival at the ceremony venue, hrh was received by engineer abdulrahman bin abdulmohsen al-fadhli, the minister of environment, water, and agriculture, as well as several ministry executives.the emir emphasized that these projects are a continuation of the significant support that the environment, water, and agriculture sectors receive from the wise leadership — may god support them — and that this support is directly reflected in the lives of people in the kingdom. he noted that these projects represent a quantum leap towards achieving environmental, water, and agricultural sustainability. this shift contributes to supporting natural resources and providing a healthy, safe environment that improves the quality of life for citizens and residents of the kingdom.hrh praised the inclusion of the north riyadh geopark project in the united nations educational, scientific and cultural organization (unesco). he emphasized that this international recognition was a result of the wise guidance of the leadership — may god protect them — as well as the ministry of environment, water and agriculture's skillful, integrated role.following the royal anthem, the ceremony began with a recitation from the holy quran. then, the minister of environment, water and agriculture delivered a speech explaining that these projects serve all cities and governorates in the riyadh region and its centers in accordance with the directives of the wise leadership and the objectives of the kingdom's vision 2030. the minister emphasized that the projects aim to enhance the drinking water distribution system for beneficiaries in the region. he noted that the national water company has implemented 61 projects to deliver drinking water and sanitation services at a cost exceeding 4.5 billion saudi riyals. these projects include the implementation of drinking water networks and sanitation services in several cities and districts in the region's governorates.the minister noted that saudi water authority (swa) has also implemented three projects to increase desalinated water production and improve water security and sustainability in the region, costing over sr 5.1billion. the saudi irrigation organization (sio) has overseen a project to modernize irrigation infrastructure, maximize resource productivity, and increase water use efficiency, costing over sr 58million. he also mentioned that the ministry implemented five water projects, costing over sr 40million, to improve the supply of drinking water to desalination plants in the capital and several other governorates.the minister stated that the national center for vegetation development and desertification control (ncvc) has implemented 10 environmental projects, costing over sr 61.2 million. the projects aimed to rehabilitate 4,000 hectares in the al-zulfi governorate; develop the fifth and sixth national parks in the al-ghat and al-zulfi regions; restore and rehabilitate the saad national park; develop the eleventh national park in the harimla region; and rehabilitate and develop the wathilan national park. additionally, the projects aimed to plant 520,000 seedlings in the imam abdulaziz bin mohammed royal reserve, the abasamri park, the houtat bani tamim governorate, and the rawda sudair region. these efforts support afforestation programs, protect biodiversity, and increase green spaces. the projects also aim to rehabilitate the pastoral seed center and protect resrve sites in the hadbaa and qidla regions.additionally, the minister unveiled 99 projects in the environment, water, and agriculture sectors for which the foundation stone has been laid. these projects have a total cost exceeding sr 28.3billion. 91 of these projects are intended to improve drinking water and sanitation services in the region. 11 of these projects are being implemented by the (swa) at a cost exceeding sr 21.4billion. 67 projects are being implemented by the nwc at a cost exceeding sr 4.6billion. one project is being implemented by the saudi water partnership company swpc) at a cost exceeding sr 1.8 billion. 11 projects are being implemented by the ministry at a cost exceeding sr 99million. the saudi irrigation organization at a cost exceeding sr 33million is implementing one other project.the minister also mentioned that the foundation stone laying projects include 8 developmental projects to enhance the agricultural sector's capacity in the region, costing over sr 254 million. these projects include 3 implemented by the ministry, costing over sr 183 million, and three by the national center for the prevention and control of plant pests and animal diseases (weqaa), costing approximately sr 46million. two projects were implemented by the sustainable agricultural rural development program, saudi reef, at a cost exceeding 24 million saudi riyals.in conclusion, minister al-fadhli emphasized that these projects reflect the region's unlimited support from the custodian of the two holy mosques, king salman bin abdulaziz al saud, and his royal highness, the crown prince and prime minister, mohammed bin salman bin abdulaziz al saud. the minister confirmed these projects reflect the environment, water and agriculture system's continued commitment to providing development services to various regions of the kingdom in line with vision 2030.then, the emir of the riyadh region viewed a presentation on the north riyadh geopark project. saudi arabia is the first country in the middle east to register two global geoparks in less than two years, an unprecedented global achievement. this reflects the kingdom's commitment to protecting natural resources, promoting sustainable local development, improving quality of life, and aligning with vision 2030's objectives to diversify the economy and enhance the kingdom's global position in environmental and natural heritage fields.the north riyadh geopark project covers an area of more than 3,000 square kilometers and includes parts of thadig governorate, al-qasab center, and several neighboring villages. the project represents an open-air natural museum documenting the earth's history and evolution over hundreds of millions of years. it includes famous rocks from the tuwaiq mountains, jurassic topographic sequences rich in ancient fossils, and valleys, caves, and plateaus highlighting the region's natural diversity.at the end of the ceremony, hrh the emir of riyadh received from the minister of environment a certificate confirming the inclusion of the north riyadh geopark project in the list of the united nations educational, scientific and cultural organization (unesco).
