In preparation for the 2025 Hajj season, the National Water Company (NWC) announced the elevation of its readiness and the completion of its operational and technical plans for managing water and wastewater services in Makkah and the Holy Sites.
The company affirmed that it had begun implementing its Hajj plan well in advance, working to enhance its services and increase readiness in line with the aspirations of Saudi Arabia’s wise leadership to mobilize all resources and provide comprehensive support for water and environmental services, enabling pilgrims to perform their rituals with ease and comfort.
NWC stated, “From an early stage, we developed strategies and plans, drawing on lessons from previous seasons to improve the quality of services provided to the guests of Allah. We have ensured the availability of the necessary water quantities to be supplied and distributed to Makkah and the Holy Sites, with a combined operational and strategic storage capacity of some 3.5 million cubic meters, and an average daily pumping volume exceeding 760,000 cubic meters. On the Day of Arafah and Eid Al-Adha, however, water pumping will exceed 1 million cubic meters, executed by a qualified workforce of more than 2,000 employees.”
The company added that it carried out three operational simulations this year: the first in late October, the second in January, and the third in April, leading up to the start of actual operations for the season. These simulations confirmed the operational efficiency of the water distribution networks, firefighting systems, cooling networks, and wastewater infrastructure. Additionally, environmental treatment plants have been prepared to the highest standards, with a wastewater treatment capacity exceeding 750,000 cubic meters.
NWC also highlighted the recent implementation of 18 capital and operational projects in Makkah and the Holy Sites, at a total cost of SAR400 million, aimed at upgrading infrastructure, enhancing water distribution, and improving the efficiency of networks that will support operations during the 2025 Hajj season, ensuring top-tier service delivery to the pilgrims.
The company emphasized that it has leveraged its advanced technologies to manage operations during Hajj, with monitoring and control conducted through centralized command centers in Makkah and the Holy Sites.
NWC confirmed that round-the-clock water supply would be maintained to the Grand Mosque, the central area, and the Holy Sites, with continuous supply to all Makkah neighborhoods that are served by the water network, following scheduled distribution plans.
Regarding water quality, the company has intensified its efforts to ensure the safety and quality of the water supply—an essential part of its operational system during Hajj. This is carried out through a central laboratory equipped with the latest internationally certified technologies, along with fixed and mobile labs at the Holy Sites. Field teams collect samples from primary water sources, operational and strategic storage facilities, and distribution networks in Makkah and the Holy Sites to verify water safety and quality.
NWC affirmed that water quality monitoring would continue 24/7 throughout the Hajj season, carried out by specialized and well-trained national teams. Over 4,000 laboratory tests will be conducted daily during the Hajj season 2025.
The company concluded by stating that its ongoing efforts reflect a strong commitment to translating plans and strategies into tangible results that serve the pilgrims, ensuring their comfort from arrival to departure after completing their rituals in peace and ease.
