NWC Signed Agreement for Tertiary Sewage Treatment, Cogeneration of Electrical and Thermal Energy

His Excellency Mr. Abdullah bin Abdurrahman Al-Husein, the Minister of Water and Electricity, Chairman of the National Water Company signed the contract for implementation of the first plant for Tertiary Sewage Treatment, Cogeneration of Electrical and Thermal Energy in the Kingdom, which will be implemented in the alliance with Al-Arrab Co, PWT German Co and ELF Austrian Co.

The contract comes within the strategy of the national water company in the sustainable management for environmental resources and renewable energy, where the station is the first of its kind in the Kingdom in the tertiary sewage treatment and cogeneration of both electrical and thermal energy.

For his part, HE Engineer Abdullah bin Abdurrahman Al-Husein, the Minister of Water and Electricity, Chairman of the National Water Company pointed out that the cost of establishing the station is SR (300) million for period of (34) months, the site of station will be located on Kharj road to serve Riyadh city with an estimated capacity of (200) thousand 3m per day.

The CEO of the National Water Company, Mr. Loay Al Musallam said that the allied and the winning companies to implement the project have exceeded the technical evaluation, requirements and specifications required for the project, adding that about (12) global companies and local companies compete for the project, pointing out that the national water company has gotten help from international consultancy firms specialized in this field to support the technical evaluation and provide the necessary support for such a special type of projects to ensure the selection of integrated solutions.
He indicated that this project emphasizes the use of potential and renewable energy in wastewater and operational programs to reduce the effects of greenhouse gases on the environment as well as reduce the pressure on industrial sources of electricity. He added that the company is in its long-term is seeking to convert sites of sewage treatment plants to one site containing three plants for producing water with high quality, and to be a key source to cover the large sectors for water demand, in addition to a plant to produce the electrical and thermal energy, and a plant to produce and extract the useful organic materials.

It is worth mentioning that the main components of the project include primary and secondary treatment units, tertiary treatment, sludge digesters unit and biogas treatment and production, as well as the electrical and thermal energy production, odors treatment system, in addition to the automatic control and management unit for the station.
